September 19-24, The Savannah Africa
Sustaining Community in Performance:
Examining contemporary artistic practice in global and local communities.
Our symposium will take place on The Savannah Africa Wildlife Preserve, where a group of international artists, primarily American and South African, will gather to address questions about contemporary artistic practice, the performer’s role in the local community, and the new global theatre community.
About the Symposium
This five-day program is open for international and local, established and emerging artists. Each day is designed to support collaboration and dialogue about artistic practice through training workshops, demonstrations, lectures, panel discussions, and performances. Different artists and companies will lead training and perform each day. Types of performance exploration will include, environmental, storytelling, ensemble-based, physical, and social performance with an emphasis on original works and new techniques of theatre practice.
About the Preserve
The Savannah Africa will provide an incredible base for our work with comfortable accommodations, substantial working space, and 5,000 acres of preserved wildlife. During the symposium, demonstrations will be given on the Savannah's work in wildlife conservation and energy sustainability. The Savannah Theatre Project and this symposium will offer resources and attention to the local area through a series of workshops for the community, to be held during the symposium. The symposium will culminate in a community performance involving both symposium participants and community members.
Dates and Festivals
The Symposium dates are conveniently situated immediately between two premiere South African theatre festivals in the area. The Witness Hilton Arts Festival, September 14-16, is five hours away in the scenic KwaZulu-Natal region, and the Arts Alive festival is celebrated all month long in Johannesburg, only an hour away from The Savannah. These festivals provide symposium participants an exciting chance to expand their personal programs to include other outstanding South African destinations, culture, and theatre to coincide with the more practical and intensive work of our symposium.
