Freedom! and the Sticky End of Make-Believe
by Thom Pasculli
Freedom! explores the battleground between reality, fiction, and fantasy in a microcosmic American neighborhood. The characters are familiar, but absurd, and the world is ridiculous, but utterly recognizable. Two households of fragmented families struggle with their own confusions and unseen oppressions as their imaginations soar to attain the lives they think they desire. The actors reveal themselves through their own bewilderment in this production that embraces physical theatre and living imagery.
Poignant, joyful, and honest: this play was written as a montage of mixed messages, memories, and questions about American archetypes, and the myths that sustain their irrelevant expectations. The myth of Freedom! asks questions about these archetypes without supplying answers, and the performance leaves a visceral imprint on the senses.
This production has completed its American tour, which culminated in a run at the: New York International Fringe Festival.
Thank you to everyone who participated! Our next performance is at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival in Hilton, South Africa on September 14-15.
The original production of this play was first presented at Double Edge Theatre, directed by Brian Fairley.
