During Corpus Christi, the Los Diablos, an anonymous brotherhood of dancing devils, flood the streets, dressed in elaborate costumes and wearing ancient devil masks, to purge the land of evil. This ceremony has its origin in African shamanism and slave culture, but has since incorporated indigenous groups, and embraced a Catholic theme. The Los Diablos embody all the sins of the world, but after days of wild dancing and drumming, they submit to the powers of good, kneeling before the town church.
In performance, the company utilized the masks, drums, and dances indicative of the festival to transport the audience to another world of color, heat, rhythm, and ritual; inviting them to join the dance.
